In May 1986, he switched from news to sport on the Nine Network.
Jones began providing weekend sports updates in 1988 and switched to evening sports in 1990.
He also fills in for Peter Hitchener on Nine News Melbourne.
Jones is most known for his work with the Nine Network in Australia, where he was a sports reporter for Nine News and hosted The Sunday Footy Show from 2006 to 2008 before returning as host in 2017. He is currently the nightly sports presenter for Nine News Melbourne.

Between 2002 and 2006, he worked as a boundary rider for Nine’s AFL coverage, and since March 2010, he has co-hosted Prime Time Sports Interactive on Radio Sport National with Michael Christian.

Jones was revealed in 2018 that she would return to the National Wide World of Sports team as an Australian Open host, alongside colleagues James Bracey and Rebecca Maddern, beginning in 2019.

Jones was appointed as the new host of Today on the Nine Network in January 2019, replacing Tim Gilbert. He held the role until November when he resigned due to a conflict of interest.
