Sophie is currently working with Nine News Sydney as a reporter. She started working for the Nine Network in Sydney in October 2009, when she was hired as a reporter for Nine News and a stand-in presenter for the network’s national bulletins.
In September 2011, she relocated to Brisbane, where the newsroom had recently been shaken by the firing of two reporters for their participation in a staged live helicopter cross during a nightly broadcast the month before.
Four Italian girls were deported from Brisbane to their father’s home in Florence, Italy, which was one of the stories she covered. In July 2016, Sophie returned to Sydney, working as a reporter and a fill-in weather presenter, replacing Alison Ariotti who had taken maternity leave.
Walsh took over Michael Best’s position as Nine News’ European reporter in June 2019, after Best returned to Australia to take the position of News Director at Nine News Perth. When Walsh was assaulted on camera in June 2020 while covering the George Floyd demonstrations in the UK for Nine’s Adelaide evening news show, she was in the middle of a live cross to Brenton Ragless then she discovered that the attack was not on air, but herself did not hurt. In October 2020, Walsh left Sydney and was replaced as the European correspondent by Carrie-Anne Greenbank.
