Poppy Okotcha Houseboat

Poppy spent four years living on a narrowboat in Ladbroke Grove, London but they have since moved and now live in a house in Devon. In a Q&A on Instagram, she said living on a boathouse offered her amazing lesson in understanding resources.

‘It was a really amazing lesson in understanding resources. On the boat you have a water tank, solar panels and either a composting loo or a toilet that stores up the waste then you have to empty it, you don’t have the council that can come and empty your bins, so everything is a bit more finite. You have a sense of understanding of how much electricity it really takes to have your fridge running, and if you run too many appliances your battery goes flat and you have to wait for it to charge back up again, or you break your battery and have to fork out loads of money to replace them. I think when you live in a house, you kind of forget how precious these things are and you start taking them for granted.’

She also did an interview with The Guardian. She said that living on a boat ‘is like a miniature version of living on a planet.’
