Michael (Stephen) Steele is an American politician and attorney. He serves as a conservative political analyst for MSNBC and hosts the “Michael Steele Podcast”. As a Republican Party politician, he previously served as a lieutenant governor of Maryland from 2003 to 2007.

He is also an author having written, “Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda” and also co-authored “The Recovering Politician’s Twelve Step Program to Survive Crisis.”

Steele was adopted as an infant by William Steele and Maebell Steele. His father died in 1962 from complications of alcoholism when he was four years old and his mother mother, who had been born into a sharecropping family in South Carolina worked as a laundress.

After Steele’s father died, his mother married John Turner, a truck driver who drove a truck for the U.S. Department of Defense. Turner also served on occasion as a limousine driver for then-Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Michael is a former Maryland lieutenant governor where he served from 2003 to 2007. He was the first African-American to be elected to statewide office in Maryland. He again made history after he was chosen to be the first African-American chairperson of the Republican National Committee (RNC) from 2009 to 2011.

He was brought up in a family of Democrats but he grew up to join the Republican party. Soon after he founded the “Republican Leadership Council”. He was named the Republican Man of the Year” in 1995 by the Republican Party. He took part in several political campaigns and in 2000 he was a delegate in the “Republican National Convention”, held in Philadelphia.

In 2005, he was named Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership and awarded the 2005 Bethune-DuBois Institute Award for his ongoing work in the development of quality education in Maryland.

He has served in several boards and commissions, including the Export-ImportBank Advisory Board, the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors, and the Republican National Committee. He also chaired GOPAC, a Republican training organization, that helps and funds national and state campaigns.

In January 2009, he was elected Chairman of the Republican National Committee but was later replaced by Reince Priebus. He was charged with revitalizing the Republican Party. During his tenure the RNC broke fundraising records, with more than $198 million raised during the 2010 congressional cycle; and Republicans won 63 House seats, the biggest pickup since 1938. His commitment to grassroots organizing and party-building at the state and local levels produced 12 governorships and the greatest share of state legislative seats since 1928, reflecting a pickup of more than 600 seats.
