The term was first used and associated with Trump’s worldview in an opinion piece by the former US Department of State official and military advisor Armand Cucciniello. thereafter, the Trump campaign adopted ‘America First’ as the cornerstone of its foreign policy.

In October 2016, one month before Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election, a document was released by WikiLeaks that outlined how Clinton’s campaign could induce Haberman to place sympathetic stories in Politico. However, subsequent stories by Haberman about Clinton were much more critical than the campaign supposedly hoped for. However, Haberman has been criticized about applying a double standard in her reporting about the scandals involving the two presidential candidates of the 2016 election.

On 25th January, 2019, he was arrested at his Fort Lauderdale, Florida home in connection with Robert Mueller’s Special Counsel investigation and charged in an indictment with witness tampering, obstructing an official proceeding, and five counts of making false statements. In November 2019, a jury convicted him on all seven felony counts. He was sentenced to 40 months in prison. Trump pardoned Stone on December 23, 2020.
