Lester Holt is an American news reporter and journalist for Dateline NBC and NBC Nightly News weekday edition. Following the demotion of Brian Williams, Lester was promoted to the permanent anchor of NBC Nightly News on June 18, 2015. Hence, he became the first African American to host as a solo anchor on a weekday edition newscast. Prior he served as an anchor, presenter, and international correspondent for CBS for 19years.

Holt dropped out of university to join a station in San Fransisco. In 1981 he joined WCBS-TV as part of the news team. In 1986 he relocated to be part of a newscast for WBBM-TV in Chicago for 14 years as a primary anchor.
He started working for a 24-hour cable news network owned by NBC. He became the senior anchor for decision 2000 on MSNBC, the television program that led in coverage of the presidential election. Holt was promoted as lead anchor for MSNBC daytime edition in 2001. During this period, he presented significant events, including the war in Afghanistan, the September 11 terrorist attack, and the United States’ declaration of war against Iraq as breaking news. He reported on the development of the Iraq war between 20002-2003, which landed him a position as chief war anchor, and he became a substitute anchor on NBC’s Today. Apart from anchoring, Lester worked as a moderator for presidential debates, including the Democratic Party presidential candidates’ debate and hosting the first presidential debate.
In addition to his major, he hosted a special for the History Channel, hosted Dateline on the ID edition of Dateline, and served for NBC Sports coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics as a sports deck reporter. In 2015 following the demotion of Brian Williams, Lester was promoted to the permanent anchor of NBC Nightly news.
