Prior, he worked as a night cops reporter for the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington. He joined Spokesman-Review in 1986, marking his first job in journalism.

He also spent over 12 months working on a 60-minute documentary, “The Everglades: Where Politics, Money and Race Collide,” which aired in August 2017 by CBS4 – WFOR-TV. The documentary focused on the 2016 environmental disaster that struck the Treasure Coast and its relation to the Everglade’s restoration.

DeFede kicked off his career after landing his first on-air job in 1986, working for The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington as a night cops reporter. In 1991, he moved to serve as a staff writer for the Miami New Times, a weekly newspaper. He was awarded multiple awards during his 11-year spent working for the newspaper. He worked for The Miami Herald for three years, from 2002 to 2005, as a metro columnist. DeFede has also served as a contributing writer at Tina Brown’s Talk magazine.

His work has been recognized and appeared on several platforms, including Loft, Newsday, The New Republic, Radar, The (London) Independent, Key West Magazine, Miami Monthly, and Mother Jones.
