Jim  is the Treasurer of Australia and has been the Member for Rankin since September 2013. After his first election, he was immediately promoted to Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Trade and Investment.

Jim joined the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Finance from 2016 to 2019. From 2015 to 2016 he was Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation, Shadow Minister for Sport and Shadow Assistant Minister for Trade, Investment and Productivity. He was also Shadow Assistant Minister for Resources in 2016.

Chalmers was also the Deputy Chair of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Tax and Revenue, a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics, and a member of the Australian Labor Party’s National Policy Forum. He was the Executive Director of the Chifley Research Centre after a number of years as Chief of Staff to the Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer.

Jim is also a member of the Griffith University Logan Campus Development Advisory Group; the Griffith University School of Government and International Relations Advisory Board, and the Board of Advisors at the Center for Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Studies at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

Jim helped to establish the Courtyard Group in 2016, a round table of Labor MPs and “Australia’s most brilliant moderate scholars from industry, the scholarly community, media, and customer backing associations

Jim’s most recent book, Changing Jobs: the Fair Go in the New Machine Age, is co-authored with Mike Quigley and was published in 2017. His earlier book about the Global Financial Crisis, Glory Daze, was released in July 2013.
