Jadon Malik Sancho Man Utd

In March 2015, not yet fifteen, Jadon Sancho moved to Manchester City FC for an initial fee of £66,000 under the Elite Player Performance Plan.

He remained in good form, scoring a brace on his debut match for Manchester City’s Under-18s, netting twice for England Under-17 in two respective youth competitions. It was soon announced that he would be fast-tracked to the senior team.

In May 2017, he debuted on his international career with the England under-17 team, which reached the final of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship. For his performances he was named player of the tournament.

In August 2017, Manchester City was scheduled to go on a US tour and his name was included in it. A contract paper, offering him £30,000-a-week, was created for the event, but Sancho refused to sign it because there was no mention that he would get any playing time.

The refusal surprised everybody, including his coach, Pep Guardiola, leading to his name being dropped. When asked about the reason behind such move, he answered that he would like to go where he could play.

On 1 July 2021, it was announced that Manchester United and Dortmund had reached an agreement for Sancho’s transfer, subject to him signing a contract and passing a medical, both of which were expected to happen after UEFA Euro 2020. The transfer was completed on 23 July, after Sancho signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year. He was given the number 25 shirt last worn by Odion Ighalo. On 14 August, he made his debut as a substitute for Daniel James in a 5–1 home league win over rivals Leeds United. On 23 November, he scored his first goal for the club, against Villarreal to secure a spot in the knockout stage of the Champions League. Five days later he scored his first Premier League goal against Chelsea after Jorginho miscontrolled a long clearance from Bruno Fernandes, allowing Sancho to take advantage of a two-on-one with Édouard Mendy.

Jadon Malik Sancho FIFA World Cup 2022

Sancho was dropped by Southgate before Rashford but, like his United teammate, is still trying to force his way back in. He has started the season well, scoring against Liverpool and Leicester, and has at least made a case to be put under consideration for the World Cup.

Like Rashford, he is perhaps fortunate that some of the other forwards around the fringes of Southgate’s squad are struggling to make an impression with their clubs. Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe, for example, has played only 48 minutes in the Premier League so far this season. In contrast, Sancho has played 423 and Rashford 523.

Southgate has more options in attacking positions than he does in defence and will have the luxury of picking on form rather than reputation when it comes to naming his forwards. When Southgate named his squad for the Nations League games in June, he picked Tammy Abraham, Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling. Sancho and Rashford have risen up the pecking order since then, while Bowen has yet to score in the league this season with West Ham currently in the Premier League’s relegation places.
