Carol Kirkwood is a Scottish weather presenter, Carol fronted The Weather Show for the BBC News channel and she’s also appeared regularly as part of The One Show’s team of reporters on BBC One. She has become a fixture for Breakfast’s many outside broadcasts over the years too.

Kirkwood’s popularity with viewers of all ages means she’s appeared on CBBC on many occasions  in particular with Sam and Mark’s Top of the Pops Saturday TV show and Do Something Different. She’s reported for the BBC’s Holiday programme, appeared on Animal Hospital and worked alongside John Craven on Castle in the Country.

Kirkwood was also an Ireland cricket international.

Kirkwood is the main weather presenter on BBC Breakfast. The programme moved from London to MediaCityUK in Salford in 2013 but Kirkwood stayed in London presenting the weather on Breakfast via video link. She presented the BBC’s The Weather Show and is also a regular contributor and reporter for The One Show. In 2011, Kirkwood co-presented the BBC One series The Great British Weather. She also presented the weather on BBC Radio 2’s The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

Kirkwood joined the BBC’s secretarial reserve in London. After a series of internal moves, she presented short slots on BBC Radio Scotland, and then BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4. Following her marriage to Jimmy Kirkwood, she left the BBC and subsequently worked in recruitment and then as a training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire. In 1992, she spent time on a now defunct cable TV channel, Windsor TV, latterly called Wire TV, along with Sacha Baron Cohen.

There’s often a daredevil side to Carol’s work. She can be found trying everything from racing high powered speed boats to a charity tandem ride for Children in Need. Somehow most Children in Need broadcasts find her trying something new, which usually involves dancing or singing live. She’s appeared as part of the newsreaders’ “Rocky Horror Show”, The Weather Girls’ “Raining Men”, she’s danced the Can-can and duetted on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.

Kirkwood rejoined the BBC at the corporation’s Elstree Studios training department in 1993 as a freelance presenter, during which time she also presented a bi-monthly programme Talking Issues for HTV West. In 1996 Kirkwood joined the new UK operation of The Weather Channel, but after it closed down she underwent training under the guidance of the BBC at the Met Office, before joining BBC News in April 1998 as a weather presenter.

Her soft Scottish brogue means she can be heard voicing a wide variety of audio projects from children’s stories about fire breathing dragons to advice about digital TV. In 2006 , she even learned to ice skate for charity – performing live for BBC One’s New Year’s Eve Special. She’s been recognised for this work by the Television and Radio Industry Club (TRIC), winning the award for best weather presenter six times!. Carol has also worked as associate director for a head-hunting organisation and as a training consultant for a management consultancy in Cheshire.
