In 1989 during the Tiananmen Square protests, CBS News hired him as an on-screen interpreter while Bob was still teaching law in Beijing, China. Later he left the law practice and committed to full-time correspondent working for several stations.
He joined ABC News in 1996. In December 2005, he took over as a co-anchor of ABC World News Today from Peter Jennings alongside Elizabeth Vargas. After his injury, Woodruff returned on February 27, 2007, with a focus topic on challenges affecting the treatment of wounded American soldiers. He later began anchoring for Nightline at scheduled intervals. On July 12, 2008, Woodruff began hosting a new weekly ABC News–produced newscast on the Planet Green television channel known as Focus EarthW With Woodruff. In 2014, Woodruff served as a host and reporter for ABC Sports and ESPN for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, accompanied by Rubens Pozzi, ESPN Brazil senior writer.
